Trefelin claim statement win; County add to Bala Town woes

If Trefelin wanted to send out a statement to the rest of the Cymru South, last night’s commanding victory over top-of-the-table Cambrian United will have done just that.

Once a scrappy first half was out of the way, Trefelin soon asserted their quality as Cambrian’s defensive errors were punished. This was never a contest of free-flowing football and curated attacks, but rather a combative test of nerve to see who’d flinch first.

Cambrian are no mugs – especially at home, where until last night, they’d taken five wins from five and still boast the best defensive record in the league. Yet, when Jasper Jones and Tyler Brock pounced on Cambrian’s defensive lapses, it was Trefelin’s dominance at the back that paved the way to an important three points for Andy Hill’s side.

Marshalled by the excellent Louis Gerrard, Trefelin defiantly shut down the hosts’ attempts to forge a way back into the contest to take a win that will further galvanise their promotion ambitions.

The win is perhaps all the more impressive in the absence of captain Joseph Jones and Luke Bowen.

Jones could be weeks away, but Trefelin anxiously await news on veteran marksman Bowen, who faces between four-to-six weeks out in the best-case scenario, but could potentially be sidelined for around four months.

COUNTY ADD TO BALA TOWN WOES

There are signs of life at Haverfordwest after a successive home win helps ease the club’s poor start. It’s difficult to envisage County’s difficulties extending much further this season, and with performances improving and players returning from injury, you expect the side to be on an upward trajectory sooner rather than later.

The same perhaps cannot be said for their opponents last night, Bala Town, who, despite their current mid-table position, have now crashed to a fourth straight defeat.

This was always going to be a difficult campaign for the Lakesiders and one of transition following the departure of Colin Caton. A strong start, which saw them lose just one of their opening five games, may have simply masked the size of the job that Steve Fisher has on his hands this season.

Fisher evidently feels his players need to deliver more, and his complaint that everyone needs to be on the same page underlines the issues the Lakesiders are having right now. Not dissimilar to Haverfordwest, the break in the league schedule for the Welsh Cup arrives at a good time next weekend.

Andy Dyer confident Ferry starlet Ruben Davies can fill the void

Nathaniel MG Cup second round: Briton Ferry 3 Trethomas Bluebirds 0

Promising young forward Ruben Davies grabbed two goals to secure Briton Ferry’s passage through to the Nathaniel MG Cup third round with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Trethomas Bluebirds last night.

Davies’ close-range header put Ferry ahead in the 16th minute, as they faced a Trethomas side still finding their rhythm after a turbulent summer that saw the squad of last season’s Cymru South runners-up completely overhauled.

The 21-year-old notched his second of the evening barely a minute into the second-half with a low finish at the near-post that left the Bluebirds with a mountain to climb.

Ferry should’ve extended their lead but were repeatedly denied by the offside flag that overruled two further goals and Trethomas goalkeeper Suleiman Susso, who turned in an erratic but effective display for Paul Evans’ side.

Ellis Sage sealed the win, firing home a late third goal, moments after coming on, as he beat Susso to Sam Snaith’s defence-splitting pass.

Briton Ferry begin their second season in the Cymru Premier next weekend with Davies likely to be given an increased role in wake of the departures of Luke Bowen and Tyler Brock, who put pen to paper with Trefelin in the off-season.

Davies made just 3 (6) league appearances for Ferry last season, scoring his only goal in a 4-3 defeat to Barry Town.

But the former Swansea City academy prospect is poised for a breakout season with Andy Dyer believing he is ready to step up and fill the void left by key departures.

“Ruben is a key player for us,” Dyer stated. “He came to us as a number nine and the truth is, we’re dropping him down a line a little bit. He’s playing in between people, he’s like a false nine.

“He has such fantastic ability in terms of in front of goal, and he’s another one that’s growing and growing in confidence and fitting in now. Let’s hope he has a big season, because the one thing we’re going to get from Ruben is goals for sure.

“When you lose two people like that [Bowen and Brock], who’ve been unbelievable for the club and have had such a positive impact on and off the pitch, you know, you have to find someone to replace that, but for Ruben to grow and develop, he actually needed that pathway, that gap and pathway of those two opening the way for him to step into it because it’s horrible being 20 years of age and not having those opportunities.”

Ferry performed something of an escape act last season. The club’s first-ever campaign in the top-flight got off to the worst possible start as a seven-game losing sequence left them rooted to the bottom of the table.

However a subsequent improvement in results saw Briton Ferry adapt to their new surroundings and eventually finish six-points above the relegation zone.

The new season kicks off with a daunting visit to champions The New Saints and Dyer is confident his young squad has matured and is prepared to step up once again.

The club recently completed a successful pre-season, culminating in a tour to Cornwall, and Dyer believes the team is in a good place both on and off the pitch.

“I think every competition that we’re going to be involved in, there’s got to be an aim for us to try and do as well as we possibly can,” he concluded. “And there’s no reason why the group can’t do as well as we possibly can and there’s no reason the group can’t have a go.”

“I think pre-season’s been fantastic, we’ve had eight weeks,” said Dyer. “We spent the first four weeks constantly on the grass, and the second four weeks we didn’t train at all. We just played games and that was great. We finished off with a nice tour in Cornwall last week, against Falmouth and Tavistock, and it was brilliant on the pitch, and off the pitch for the boys. Now, we’re all really glad we’re up and going.”

Reflecting on the progress of his squad, which Dyer describes as a “very, very young group,” he noted a significant change from last season. “There’s been loads of development, growing and learning over the last 12 months. They don’t look young now. They looked young last year trying to find their way. It looks an established group, but time will tell now.”

Dyer is under no illusion about the difficulties that lie ahead in the top flight. “The challenges ahead are going to be a lot tougher than tonight, that’s no disrespect to who we played tonight,” he admitted. “We’re going to have to defend a lot more, we’re going to be challenged a lot more, of course we are. So for me, it’s about us getting as many points on the board as quickly as we possibly can by hook or by crook.”

A key change for the upcoming season is a new, clearer tactical approach. “The main difference between us this year is there’s a very clear way how we’re doing things,” Dyer explained. “Last year, I probably got caught up in trying to do something that really wasn’t effective. So we spent all pre-season making sure everybody knows their roles and responsibilities.”

Three’s the magic number for Tier 2

The stakes are higher than ever for the return of the Cymru North and Cymru South

Change was something Welsh football never seemed to do well. Poorly conceived, communicated, and executed ideas left the more cynical among us viewing the inception of the Cymru North and Cymru South – replacing the Cymru Alliance and Welsh League in 2019 – as little more than a rebranding exercise.

Yet, in just six short years (or five actual seasons, factoring in the lost COVID year), few would now argue that Tier 2 football is flourishing under the Cymru Leagues umbrella.

Clubs are steadily improving their facilities and infrastructure, edging away from their amateur roots with increased confidence and know-how. The competitive element of Tier 2 football boasts a wonderfully endearing fierce-but-friendly mentality, generating an unquantifiable buzz among clubs throughout the Cymru North and South.

Galvanised by newfound ambitions that once seemed far-fetched and unachievable, these clubs are now fully committed to progressive advancement, aided by a long-overdue extension of support and financial assistance from the governing body

With the much-anticipated Cymru Premier 16-club expansion just 12 months away, the 2025/26 season offers an unprecedented opportunity, making three promotion spaces available for the top three clubs in both the Cymru North and Cymru South.

Until the end of the season, the cynics will point out a possible flaw in the expansion format and the uncertainty that would be caused if more than two of the six promotion candidates were unable to meet the Tier 1 criteria, but in what is an unparalleled era of hope for our domestic leagues, it’s time to champion an optimistic outlook.

The main contenders

In the South, the battle for those promotion spots will be particularly fierce. The arrival of Aberystwyth Town, dropping into the league after circling the drain at the foot of the Cymru Premier table for a season too many, further complicates the picture. Although, how the new-look Seasiders respond to their new surroundings will determine ambitions of an immediate return to the top-flight.

Trethomas Bluebirds were pipped to the Cymru South title last season but they enter the new campaign with more than a runner’s up hangover to contend with. Mark Dunford’s decision to depart the club at the end of the season sparked a brutal summer that saw no less than 10 players follow their former manager to his newly appointed Pontypridd United.

That should bode well, in theory, for Pontypridd, whose fifth-place finish last season felt like something of an underachievement. Their hopes this time around will rest on whether Dunford can repeat last season’s feat with a group of players he has already succeeded with. Will the rest of the Cymru South be less off-guard and better prepared for the Pontypridd-Trethomas hybrid this time around?

Cambrian United could well be lifting the Cymru South title at the end of next season, giving The Rhondda representation in the 16-team Cymru Premier. Golden Boot winner Liam Eason headlines a list of impressive arrivals.

Newport City will be looking to continue their strong finish to last season and build on last season’s third-place finish. The arrivals of Kayne Mclaggon and Nat Jarvis provides Sam Houldsworth’s side added firepower and it’s difficult to see them falling away.

Trefelin can also be expected to be in the mix having put together a promising front-line that will see Lee Trundle joined by summer signings Tyler Brock and Luke Bowen.

Cardiff face fight from MLS clubs for Bale signature; new Aberystwyth kits; TNS close in on new signing; Trundle returns to pre-season training at Ammanford and more…

We sign off the week with a brief round up from clubs throughout Wales.

Gareth Bale’s future could be decided in the next few days. Cardiff City have a contract ready and waiting for him to sign, but face strong competition from to MLS clubs for his signature. (Paul Abbandonato / Wales Online)

Aberystwyth Town have unveiled their new home and away kits for next season, continuing their partnership with Italian manufacturer Acerbis. The new home shirt sees the club return to black and green strips for the first time in over 15 years. Both shirts are available to pre-order now. (Official club site)

The New Saints are believed to be close to confirming the signing of a new goalkeeper. (EXCL – Welsh Football Notebook)

NOTES: Saints have sought to add a new goalkeeper to their ranks ever since long-serving first-choice keeper Paul Harrison retired at the end of last season. They have been unable to resolve that situation – until now, where I understand they are close to closing to completing a deal with an unnamed player. Backup stopper Connor Roberts played midweek versus Bala and despite his experience, Saints want to strengthen in advance of their first European game, which is now less than two weeks away.

Adran League champions Swansea City ladies will find out who they will face in the first round of the Uefa Womens Champions League this afternoon. (Adran Leagues)

Lee Trundle was amongst those to return to pre-season training at Ammanford last night. The club have also confirmed Liam Samuel, Tom Pratt and Morgan Clarke will all be remaining at the club for the upcoming campaign. (Official club Twitter)

Pontypridd Town United (I wonder how many times I’m going to say/write that next season) have announced three pre-season games cumulating with the visit of Hereford on 29 July. Entry to their opening game, against Risca United, is free of charge. (Official club Twitter)

Bale transfer talks; Flint Town; Connah’s Quay and more in Thursday’s notebook…

A bit later than usual getting this posted, not a great deal of domestic news but Gareth Bales’ proposed move to Cardiff City appears to be inching closer towards becoming reality.

Gareth Bale and Cardiff City manager Steve Morrison held talks in person yesterday at Cardiff Vale. (Glenn Williams / Wales Online)

NOTE: Whilst he won’t be short of potential offers, my gut feeling is that this unlikeliest of moves might just come to fruition. For Bale to have met Morrison in person, you would expect there to already be at least a basic level of understanding or proposed contractual agreement in place, overcoming what is obviously the biggest hurdle to such a move. Whether the rigours of the Championship is the right environment for Bale to get into optimal condition ahead of the World Cup remains to be seen and it’s debatable whether playing in the second tier will get him to his very best, but should this move transpire, it’ll be one of the most incredible transfers in living memory.

Former Llandudno and Caernarfon Town manager Iwan Williams has returned to the Cymru Premier after joining new Flint Town United manager Lee Fowler’s backroom staff.

Williams will join the Silkmen as first-team coach and said: “I’m delighted to be returning to the Welsh system as I feel I have unfinished business at this level, and I’m particularly pleased to be joining a great club like Flint, whom I nearly joined on a couple of occasions during my playing days. I’ve known ‘Fowls’ for a long time, as he played for me at Caernarfon. As soon as he started talking to me about his plans , it got me excited and I wanted to be part of it”

Danny Bell, who is already at the club, has also been appointed as a first-team coach.

The club have also released their pre-season friendly programme, starting a week next Saturday against Mold Alexandra. (Official club site / official club Twitter)

Neal Eardley has agreed a new one-year deal with Connah’s Quay. Eardley joined the Nomads last October after making over 300 Football League appearances and was capped 16 times for Wales. (Official club site)

FAW announce £4million pot for grassroots football; Phoebie Poole discusses national team pathway; Nathaniel MG Cup draw; Aberystwyth; TNS-Bala and more…

There’s a positive feel to this morning’s notebook with the promise of a grassroots legacy and the new domestic season edging ever nearer, following the draw of the Nathaniel MG Cup first round and two Cymru Premier clubs going head-to-head in a pre-season meeting last night. As always, feel free to get involved via the comments or social media, and thanks to those who’ve recently started following along.

The FAW have announced that World Cup qualification will allow them to invest £4 million into developing grassroots facilities in Wales. (FAW)

NOTES: This investment is not just a commitment towards grassroots football, but promises to create a long-standing legacy in communities across Wales that will celebrate our World Cup qualification for years to come. Details on funding and how clubs can apply will be made available over the summer and autumn. Let’s hope this funding is utilised to make a real difference.

Cardiff City striker Phoebie Poole believes playing in the Adran League can be a pathway for other domestic-based players to reach the national team following her recent call-up to the forthcoming development camp squad. (Genero Adran Leagues)

The draw for the first round of the Nathaniel MG Cup was announced last night with ties being played over the weekend of Saturday 23 July. (Cymru Football)

NOTES: The southern section of the draw threw up two early NPT derbies with Goytre United drawn against Trefelin and Briton Ferry hosting Afan Lido. Other notable ties include last season’s Cymru South champions Llantwit Major facing Carmarthen Town and Swansea Uni against Cambrian & Clydach.

The New Saints ran out 4-1 winners as they hosted Bala Town in a pre-season friendly last night.

NOTES: The main objective of this early meeting between the two sides would’ve been to help both teams build their match sharpness and competitive edge ahead of their respective European ties. Two goals either side of half-time, including a brace from Adrian Cieslewicz gave Saints a four-goal lead, before recent Bala signing James Davies reduced to the deficit. Ben Clarke and Jordan William were also on target for the Park Hall club.

Harri Horwood is looking forward to reuniting with former manager Anthony Williams after Aberystwyth Town confirmed the 22-year-old has returned for a third spell with the club. Horwood played for Penrhyncoch last season but previously played under Williams when at Cardiff Met. “Last season was only my first full season of senior football, so I can’t thank Fred, Sion and the Penrhyn boys enough.” he said.

“Taff (Williams) is a great manager with great ideas. From our time together at Met, it’s clear to see he has exciting plans for an attractive style of play that we can’t wait to show the fans next season.

“I know this is my third stint at the club but hopefully this time around I can showcase to the fans what I can offer to the squad.” (Official club site)

Cefn Druids have announced defender Phil Mooney has extended his stay at the Rock for another season. (Official club Twitter)

Airbus UK Broughton have announced several pre-season games, including matches against Hyde and Northwich as they build-up to their return to the Cymru Premier. (Official club Twitter)

Welsh football notebook, Tuesday 21 June

Good morning! The national teams are back in the headlines following Ryan Giggs’ resignation last night, while Gemma Grainger has announced the latest women’s squad. Let’s get on with today’s notebook…

Ryan Giggs has finally resigned from his position as Wales manager. (BBC Sport Wales / FAW)

NOTES: A mere 77-word statement from the FAW in response to Ryan Giggs’ announcement last night felt wholly appropriate.

It’s been 19 months since Giggs first stepped aside and he finally leaves the FAW via the backdoor. Giggs states he did not want the country’s preparations for the World Cup to be affected, but he had already hung around for too long, at risk of casting a negative shadow over a golden era for the Welsh football.

It’s important to clearly acknowledge that Giggs is innocent until proven otherwise – nonetheless the charges he faces are serious and make for grim reading.

Many, myself included, will be asking why didn’t he make the decision to walk away much sooner? Given the severity of the circumstances, you would like to think that out of respect for Robert Page and the players – if nothing else – Giggs would’ve left his role to remove any lingering uncertainty around his future.

Given how successfully Page has stepped up and grown into the job under the circumstances, if Giggs harboured any intention of ever returning to his role, it would be pretty clear who the fans would want in charge.

Giggs will be remembered for putting his own interests in retaining his role ahead of the interests of the national team, at the risk of destabilising them as they headed into Euro 2020 and beyond. And for that alone, there would’ve been a collective sigh of relief when last night’s news finally broke. Good riddance.

In more upbeat news, Wales women’s boss Gemma Grainer believes Wales’ potential is endless as she named her squad for the upcoming friendly against New Zealand and a two-day development squad that will work before the main squad joins up. (Clwb Pel Droed)

Sgorio have agreed a new four-year agreement to show domestic football and Under-21 games. (FAW)

NOTES: This is great news, particularly for the Cymru Leagues who sorely lack media coverage. The new deal will see Sgorio broadcast a minimum of 35 domestic matches each season across the domestic game until the 2025/26 campaign. No other media organisation has come anywhere close to showing the level of commitment and genuine interest Sgorio have for the domestic game – and for that, they should be applauded.

Even with Sgorio, there is a void in general media coverage that needs to be filled to allow the Cymru Leagues to reach a wider audience. A ‘magic wand scenario’ would be for the likes of BBC Sport Wales and prominent newspapers across Wales to also provide more extensive coverage, but that seems unlikely to change.

The first round for the Nathaniel MG Cup takes place tonight at 7pm and will be broadcast online. Caersws and Denbigh Town are the two wildcard entrants joining the Tier 2 clubs in the draw. More on this tomorrow. (Cymru Leagues)

Bala Town are asking fans of both the Lakesiders and Sligo Rovers to declare their interest ahead of attending their Europa Conference League tie. (Official club Twitter)

Meanwhile, Kieran Smith is let loose with a mic in anticipation of that tie. (Sgorio)

Connah’s Quay have announced the signing of striker Joe Makin. The 23-year-old arrives from Nantwich Town of the Northern Premier Division. “He’s a good young talent with great potential. He’s quick, athletic, powerful and can score goals whilst playing as a lone striker as a two or anywhere across front three,” revealed manager Craig Harrison.

Neco Williams; Aberystwyth; Bala Town; Danny Gossett; Anthony Limbrick and more in this morning’s weekend roundup…

Good morning, here’s a bumper roundup of the news and snippets from over the weekend…

Paul Abbandonato believes Gareth Bale can cement and even greater legacy in Welsh football by joining Cardiff City this summer. (Wales Online)

Neco Williams is expected to be loaned out again by Liverpool next season, with a return to Fulham or Nottingham Forest being touted as possible destinations. (The Mirror)

Cancer survivor and Cymru Premier star Danny Gosset is urging Welsh communities to donate blood. (Welsh Blood Service)

Long serving Ammanford defender Nich Arnold will remain with his hometown club next season after his last campaign was scuppered by injury. Striker Mathew Fisher and winger Richard Lewis have also agreed terms on new deals. (Official club Twitter)

Club captain Chris Baker and CJ Craven have been retained by Cardiff Met for next season. (Official club Twitter)

Bala Town have bolstered their squad for their forthcoming European campaign by adding Wrexham-born Telford United right-back Ross White and pacey forward James Davies from Newtown. (Official club site)

NOTES: White isn’t a player I’m aware of, although Bala’s release states he can play anywhere across the back, which should make him a useful addition. Davies arrives with an established reputation in the Cymru Premier. He may not hold down a regular place week in, week out in the Bala line-up but his pace, flair and tendancy to shine in big games could make him a significant threat, even from the bench as Colin Caton takes the Lakesiders back into Europe.

Aberystwyth Town continue to build their squad for next season with the signings of former Cefn Druids midfielder Charlie Edge and 29-year-olds Sam Litchfield and Iwan Lewis from Guilsfield. The pair were both named in the Cymru North’s Team of the Season. “I’m delighted that Sam and Iwan have chosen to join us as both had offers elsewhere. They will bring heaps of experience and quality to our squad; Sam is a dominant, athletic centre-half and Iwan brings huge energy as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder,” said manager Anthony Williams. (Official club site)

NOTES: Providing they can adapt to the step-up of playing in the Cymru Premier, Litchfield and Lewis could be two of the Aber’s most important signings this summer. At 29, the pair have not been signing by Williams to nurture and develop, but rather to solidify the squad. Litchfield, who previously had a brief spell in the top-flight with Newtown, was captain of the Guilsfield side that finished third in the Cymru North last season should become a mainstay in the Aber defence next season. Lewis should add experience and legs in the middle of the park, perhaps alongside veteran Alex Darlington.
